You know what? It's been a weird summer for movies. I can't remember the last time that I was this pumped up for this many movies in a single summer. But my enthusiasm has faded faster than the paint on a 1985 Chevy Citation.
Everything was shaping up so well too. We had the next Pirates of the Caribbean, Ocean's 13, and Spiderman 3. I was planning on seeing all three of those on the very first weekend. Well, Spiderman was the only one I ended up seeing. I think that movie might have broken my whole spirit for the summertime movie experience. So, here is a quick rundown of the movies I have seen, including one DVD pick.
First, the Spiderman 3 debacle. I am not sure what the proper protocol is for talking about movies that you're not sure everyone has seen. However, if you haven't figured out that I will be describing movie details then you deserve to have some plot details spoiled. Anyway, all I will say is that this was a chick flick wrapped in an action movie overcoat. There was more crying than Steel Magnolias. It wasn't horrible or anything, but I was just disappointed on how it played out. I will say that the special effects were pretty incredible. The Sandman being able to blow away and then reform was very cool. Other than that, I would say that if you haven't seen it yet wait for the DVD. And make sure to bring a box of tissues. Not for you, but for the cast.
Next, I saw the new Die Hard movie, Live Free or Die Hard. I'll be honest. I didn't have the highest of hopes for this film. Rarely do sequels live up to the hype. The third sequels have an even worse track record. I will say that I left the theater pleasantly surprise. I think that much of my apprehension stemmed from the supporting cast of Justin Long, aka Mac Guy. I saw this guy killing the entire movie. However, the opposite was true. The plot is a slightly unrealistic, and some of the scenes are probably un-doable. For instance, I don't think that a F-35 would miss a semi driving on the highway with a missile not once, but twice. Other than that I didn't have too many complaints. I highly suggest that you catch it in the theater for no other reason than its always cool to see stuff get blown up on a big screen. If you're not a theater person, than catching the DVD is a must.
Finally, I have one DVD pick as well. This is a movie that when it originally came out I was thinking that I had to see it in the theaters. Well, I blinked and it was in my local Hollywood Video before I knew it. And what movie was this? Breach. For those of you unfamiliar with this movie, it is the story of former FBI Agent Robert Hanssen. He worked in the FBI's counterintelligence division and eventually sold secrets to the Soviet Union. This act of espionage is widely considered to be the greatest security breach in the history of American intelligence. The movie deals with the relationship between Hanssen and another agent assigned to gather evidence of his guilt. I would say that this is a perfect DVD movie. Definitely worth seeing if you're a fan of the genre.
Also, if you have any movies that you think that I should check out this summer please let me know in the comments section.
That's it for this week. Talk to you in a few days.

El Von here, to comment on Kevin's picks would be...1. Spiderman needs to stop! 2. Live Free or Die Hard is the 4th installment of the series, not the 3rd (DH1, DH2, DH w/ Vengenance, LF or DH). 3. Breach is awesome! I too recommend it to anyone looking for a good DVD. I almost went out and bought a book on it I liked it so much.
As for my picks, "Knocked Up" was hilarious! I strongly recommend that one. I'd say 4 stars out of 5. Oceans 13 was good, i'd give it 3.5 stars. I liked it much better than part 2 and it was pretty smooth again. Pirates 3 was ok, I give it 3 stars. I definitely left it wide open for part 4.
That's all for me.
I would just like to defend myself. The Die Hard movie was the third sequel, and fourth overall.
