Toss that Salad.....

I just caught this little tidbit on CNN.com, and it made me chuckle so I felt I would pass it along. I guess that there is some kind E.coli outbreak regarding bagged spinach. Well, either someone at CNN.com is either pretty funny, or totally uninformed. For about 20 minutes the main page for the site, one of the most heavily visited everyday, had the headline of "Toss that Salad." I wish I would have captured a screenshot of it. Now, we see the more Cnn-like headline of "Don't eat bagged spinach." So, either they are totally clueless about these kinds of things, or Skippy the Intern will have a hell of a story to tell his buddies at the bar tonight.

P.S. PSU will dominate the juggernaut of Youngstown State. I will be in the house for the game, and then going to visit my mug at the Phyrst afterwards.

Till Monday

Fuck Spinach.

Tomorrow...PSU 27 YSU 10
I will be honing my skills as a winemaker at a wine makers festival, but should be home for most of the game. Homemade wine is a very cheap way to drink. I bought all of my equipment for $110 and I go to the finger lakes to buy juice for ~$5 a gallon depending on the grape varietal. Excluding startup costs, I make wine for about $2 per 750 mL bottle. I highly recommend it to my fellow drinkers.

hey cwg,

how long does it take to make wine? I'm guessing 6-12 months depending on the grape and yeast used. How does the wine turn out?

I tried making beer and it came out OK, but notihng special. I was going to give it a shot again this fall, and I need to buy new equipment anyways so maybe wine is the thing to do. I have a feeling making wine takes less steps than making beer, assuming you buy the juice. Let me know how it goes because I'm interested. It seems like there is a pretty strong homebrew/home winemaking presence around here.

If you make if from concentrate...4-6 weeks...if you make it from juice 6-8 weeks...I recommend "The winemakers companion" I got it on Amazon for like $15. However, there is no substitute for practice. My first batch was drinkable, but that is about it. Now, most of the them are pretty good. The best part is that even if the whole batch is shitty, you are only about about $25 for wine, $2 for yeast and yeast nutrient and $1 for the couple of cups of sugar. Here is a good website to buy stuff...I have not used it but some guys I know do...I buy my stuff at a hobby store in Clarks Summit. If you get serious, let me know...also start saving your wine bottles...a 5 gallon batch make 24-26 750mL bottles.

I have also tried making my own beer(I have not had as much luck as wine...you are right...wine is much easier). I have some working right now...It is chocolate stout.

DWB,

I meant 6-8 weeks before you COULD drink the wine...most people let the wine set in the bottle for 6-12 months to get the best flavor...but you don't have to
